HOW IS POLLEN CONSUMED?
Pollen has an exceptionally positive impact on the human body. Due to its remarkable and valuable nutritional components and its effect on human health, pollen is another superfood gifted to humans, gathered by diligent bees. In this post, we won’t focus on pollen’s nutritional benefits or its effect on human health (you can read more about that in our post “Flower Powder - Pollen”), but rather on how to use pollen and how to best store it.
To fully benefit from pollen, it’s best to use fresh pollen purchased from a local beekeeper. Fresh pollen can easily be incorporated into our daily diet, but attention is needed: the human digestive system cannot break down the celluloid shell that coats the pollen grain. Any use of fresh pollen that hasn’t been properly prepared will allow the body to absorb only a small fraction of its nutrients.
To fully utilize pollen’s nutrients, it’s best to use it as follows:
- Mix 300 grams of fresh pollen with 1 kg of crystallized or liquid honey and let it sit for 7 days, allowing the honey’s enzymes to break down the pollen grains for better absorption.
- Add 1-2 tablespoons of pollen to a glass of yogurt and let it sit overnight. It can then be consumed in the morning on an empty stomach.
- Combine 1-2 tablespoons of pollen, honey, and blueberries with sour milk. Let it sit for about 12 hours, and then it’s ready for use.
- Add 1-2 tablespoons of pollen and 1 tablespoon of honey to lukewarm tea or milk and let it sit overnight. It can then be consumed the next morning on an empty stomach.
- Add pre-soaked fresh pollen in yogurt, tea, milk, or sour milk to a blender with 1-2 tablespoons of honey, blueberries, and raspberries. Blend well, and it’s ready to enjoy.
- Overnight Oats with Pollen: Add 1 tablespoon of pollen to your overnight oats recipe, mixing the fresh pollen with oats, milk, and fruit. In the morning, you’ll have a nutrient-packed breakfast ready to eat.
- Morning Smoothie Boost: Add 1-2 tablespoons of fresh pollen to your favorite morning smoothie. Blend it with a banana, almond milk, spinach, and a handful of berries for an extra nutritional boost.
Of course, fresh pollen can also be used with your favorite ice cream, pancakes, cake, or another dessert, although its nutrient absorption won’t be as high.
How to Store Fresh Pollen?
To preserve all the nutrients, it’s best to keep pollen frozen and use it as needed. Though frozen, pollen is very easy to use. Pollen can stay at room temperature for several hours without losing its essential properties, but it’s best to keep it frozen at all times. Also, if your fresh pollen is mixed with honey, it can be stored at room temperature, as honey naturally preserves the pollen.
